About the John Lionel Stretton website

John Lionel Stretton has an important place in medical history but few people beyond his home town of Kidderminster will have heard of him.

Following publication of his book, Memoirs of the 'iodine' surgeon, his great grandson, Chris Stretton, is keen to promote his achievements to a wider audience and this website is the first stage of this process.

Lionel was the middle of five consecutive generations of medics in the same family who trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, between the 1820s and the 1950s. He was one of twelve children and his father, Samuel, was one of ten.

The family is in the process of creating an Archive (physical and electronic) which will pull together the huge amount of historical material from various arms of the family, securing it for the future and making it easily available to family members.

If you are related to these parts of the Stretton family and have not yet been in touch with us, please contact Chris
